Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday expressed deep appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gesture of gifting a silver filigree purse — a traditional Tarakasi craft from Cuttack — to the Spouse of the President of Ghana during his recent diplomatic engagement.
Calling it a proud moment for Odisha, the Chief Minister said, “Grateful to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji for showcasing Odisha’s cultural pride on the global stage through his thoughtful gestures that celebrate and promote our rich heritage.”
Highlighting the significance of the gift, Majhi described
the silver filigree purse as a “remarkable tribute” to Odisha’s centuries-old
Tarakasi tradition. “Meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans, this elegant
piece features delicate floral and vine motifs created from fine silver wires.
It reflects the exceptional artistry, heritage, and devotion of Odisha’s
craftspeople,” he added.

Majhi noted that such symbolic gestures not only promote the
state’s traditional art forms internationally but also reinforce the pride and
identity of the Odia people. “These efforts bring global attention to Odisha’s
timeless traditions and reaffirm our collective pride in Odia Asmita,” he said.
Tarakasi is a fine silver filigree craft unique to Cuttack,
dating back over 500 years. Known for its intricate designs and detailed
workmanship, the art form has long been associated with Odisha’s cultural
identity and is often showcased in major national and international
exhibitions.
